PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT

  • HISTORY

The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology (formerly known as Department of Electrical Engineering Technology) commenced intake of students in 1994 for a one-year programme in electrical installation works, leading to the award of Intermediate Certificate in Electrical Installation Works (ICEI) and Advanced Certificate in Electrical Installation Works (ACEI) respectively. The popularity of the courses in the Kaura Namoda educational zone for over seven (7) years resulted in the acceleration of the commencement of National Diploma programme in 2000.

  • National Diploma (ND) Programme

The National Diploma (ND) programme commenced in the 2000/2001 session, with the approval of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), which subsequently accredited the programme during the next session. During the succeeding years, students’ enrolment has steadily rise to a cumulative 1700 students by 2020. The curriculum specifications are provided by the NBTE, which also doubles as the supervisory parastatal of the government. The ND programme of the Department is fully accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).

  • Higher National Diploma (HND) Programme

The Department commenced the Higher National Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering during the 2006/2007 session. The two options offered are Electronics and Telecommunications (E/T) option and Electrical Power and Machines (P/M) option respectively. These options are fully accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). With availability of these options, prospective students exercise their prerogative by choosing any of them that suits their future aspirations, and thus prepare themselves for future lifelong learning in the myriad of specializations and sub-specializations of electrical and electronic engineering profession. Each of these options is under the oversight of a Unit Head who assists the Head of Department to monitor and enforce quality assurance in learning and development of the students.

  • PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy underlying the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering technology is to further the frontier of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology education for sustainable development of Nigeria. Traditionally, the discipline of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology in the Nigerian Polytechnic system is concerned with the development of skilled technicians and technologists, who are strategically positioned to boost the middle cadre bracket of Nigeria’s labour market with requisite skills and knowledge necessary to sustain the economy.

The curriculum is therefore tailored to equip learners with practical skills and enable them to adapt to real-world engineering workplace dynamics after graduation.

  • MISSION

The mission of the Department is produced engineering technicians and technologists who are skilled and equipped with domain knowledge in electrical and electronic systems maintenance and repairs, electrical installation design and works of built environments, in addition to development of entrepreneurial competencies for post-training self-reliance.

  • VISION

The vision of the Department is to be adjudged a Centre of Excellence of choice for training and development of electrical and electronic engineering technicians and technologists who are adaptable to life-long technological needs of Nigeria’s evolving economy.

  • OBJECTIVES

The core objectives of the Department are as follows:

  1. Train and equip engineering technicians and technologists with relevant up-to-date knowledge and deployable problem-solving skills to undertake services in the engineering sector of the Nigerian economy
  2. To produce engineering technicians and technologists who are adaptive to changes in the society
